Movsar Evloev emerged victorious over Lerone Murphy in a closely contested five-round bout at UFC London’s O2 Arena this Saturday, winning by majority decision.
The initial rounds saw both fighters primarily striking, with Murphy landing effective blows and aiming to build momentum. However, the fight quickly intensified and grew more competitive.
As the fight progressed into the later rounds, Evloev exerted increasing dominance, effectively blending wrestling and grappling. He consistently secured takedowns and maintained top control, ultimately outworking Murphy.
This victory marked Evloev’s 20th professional win, preserving his undefeated record and solidifying his claim as a prime contender for a title shot. In his post-fight Octagon interview, Evloev directly addressed the promotion: “UFC, there is no excuse not to let me fight for the title. I have nothing more to say.”
Evloev playfully suggested that featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has been anticipating their matchup for a long time and is “getting old.” He expressed readiness for a swift return to the Octagon in May to challenge the Australian champion.
Volkanovski responded humorously to the callout, stating, “This old man still has some tricks left. Bring it on,” effectively accepting the challenge. While UFC CEO Dana White has yet to officially confirm the bout, a decision is expected soon.
Volkanovski Eyes Evloev Fight as Redemption Opportunity
Alexander Volkanovski, widely considered the greatest featherweight in UFC history, boasts an impressive record against top contenders. However, his attempts to achieve double-champion status in the lightweight division against Islam Makhachev have been unsuccessful on two occasions.
While the first fight with Makhachev was a close contest where Volkanovski showcased strong wrestling defense, he was ultimately knocked out in their second encounter. Volkanovski believes defeating Movsar Evloev would be a valuable addition to his legacy, particularly given his prior loss to a Russian opponent.
On his YouTube channel, Volkanovski articulated his motivation: “Dagestani and Chechen wrestling have proven highly effective, and many fighters struggle to counter it. As seen in my fight with Islam, I believe I can handle that style. I would love to face Evloev and overcome this specific challenge.”
Volkanovski expressed admiration for Evloev’s performance against Lerone Murphy and welcomed the prospect of facing an undefeated challenger. The upcoming matchup promises intrigue, as fans await to see if Evloev can halt Volkanovski’s current winning streak in the featherweight division.
