Amazon Prime Video is expanding its focus for the second season of its hockey documentary series, Faceoff: Inside the NHL.

On Thursday, the streaming service revealed that the new season, offering a look behind the scenes at the lives of NHL stars, will include twelve new individuals alongside the return of two key figures from Season 1: Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander and Florida Panthers standout Matthew Tkachuk.

The lineup for Season 2`s six episodes will prominently feature Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins), Marc-Andre Fleury (Minnesota Wild), Mikko Rantanen (Dallas Stars), Hockey Hall of Famer Brendan Shanahan, Sean Monahan (Columbus Blue Jackets), Thomas Harley (Dallas Stars), Seth Jarvis (Carolina Hurricanes), Wyatt Johnston (Dallas Stars), Anze Kopitar (Los Angeles Kings), Zach Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets), and Quinton Byfield (Los Angeles Kings).

Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa Senators) had been previously announced as a participant.

Mark Shopiro, head of Amazon Prime Video Canada, commented, “`Expect the unexpected. You saw last year in Season 1 just peeks behind that we had never seen before in the NHL and more access to players than ever before. And what we’re excited about for Season 2 is getting to go even deeper with the players.`”

Shopiro also promised more interviews with teammates, friends, and family members connected to the featured stars, building on the high production standards established by Box To Box with popular sports series such as F1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing.

He added, “`Heading into Season 2, the players certainly have more of a feel for it, and I think we also have more of a sense for what types of stories are resonating best. We have some pretty significant moments within hockey overall, and then obviously bringing new players into the spotlight.`”

Cameras from Amazon filmed behind the scenes during significant events, including February’s 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, recently named Sports Event of the Year at the SBJ Sports Business Awards, and when Alex Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky`s all-time goals record.

Viewers can expect intriguing glimpses into the life of the often-private Crosby, along with potential further insight into Rantanen’s two trades, Fleury’s likely final season, Monahan’s challenging winter, and Shanahan’s recent tenure in Toronto.

Shopiro did not disclose the exact viewership numbers for Season 1 but indicated that the show`s renewal reflects strong fan interest. He emphasized the importance of Amazon`s partnership with the NHL, especially given the success of Prime`s Monday Night Hockey, which attracted a younger audience and is set to return in 2025-26.

With anticipation growing for Season 2, many fans might wonder if a third season of Faceoff is planned.

“`We’ll see. It’s hard to say at this point,` Shopiro stated. `We`ll complete Season 2 and then assess the outcome. We feel very positive about the series` potential for longevity. Our goal is to keep providing content that is interesting and exciting for fans and our Prime members, as long as there is interest.`”

The series Faceoff is executive produced by James Gay-Rees, Paul Martin, and Hillary Olsen for Box To Box, Steve Mayer for NHL Productions, and features Daniel Amigone as showrunner.

The specific release date in 2025 for Season 2 is expected to be announced at a later time.
