John Tavares finds himself in a position with slightly less negotiating power compared to a typical star player nearing unrestricted free agency. While such players usually hold significant leverage, Tavares has been transparent about his preference to remain a Toronto Maple Leaf for the rest of his career, openly revealing his intentions.
Evidently, the 34-year-old is not currently, or at least not yet, taking a demanding approach in his contract discussions with the team.
From the Maple Leafs` perspective, GM Brad Treliving stated he is a “huge John Tavares fan” during his year-end media availability on Thursday. However, he also mentioned that the team`s internal planning was not sufficiently advanced to guarantee that either Tavares or Mitch Marner would definitely receive a new contract offer before July 1.
While Marner`s future in Toronto is uncertain, it`s difficult to imagine, for several reasons, that the Leafs and Tavares won`t engage in serious contract talks eventually. Should Tavares` representatives wish to apply a little pressure during negotiations, their strongest argument might be that if Tavares doesn`t return as the team`s second-line centre next season, the alternative could represent a significant and concerning drop in quality.
