Avalanche Finding Their Peak Form as Playoffs Approach

While it may seem odd to suggest the NHL’s top team faced challenges, the Colorado Avalanche recently experienced a dip in form. Before their current three-game winning streak, they had a mediocre 15-11-3 record, a significant departure from their usual dominant performance.

However, a convincing 6-2 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins has reignited the Avalanche’s familiar dominance. With only twelve regular-season games left, they appear to be regaining their peak performance just in time.

Reinforcements Boost the Roster

A crucial factor in this resurgence is the return of several vital players. Defensive forward Logan O’Connor is back after hip surgery, Ross Colton rejoined the team in the same game, and captain Gabriel Landeskog has recovered from a severe injury sustained from an accidental hit.

It’s clear that these players significantly enhance the Avalanche’s strength. O’Connor offers versatility across the bottom two lines, Colton has slotted into the second line, and Landeskog has bolstered the top line.

A fully healthy Avalanche squad boasts unmatched lineup flexibility, allowing them to dictate matchups. Their depth is a luxury many teams aspire to but rarely attain.

Contributions Across the Entire Lineup

This remarkable depth ensures dangerous contributions from every part of their roster. While stars like Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and Martin Necas lead the offensive charge, they are far from the sole contributors.

Brock Nelson is enjoying a career-best season, and Artturi Lehkonen was set for a personal high in points before injuries intervened. Even bottom-six forward Parker Kelly has contributed 16 goals, while defensemen Sam Malinski and Brent Burns have provided unexpected offensive boosts.

On occasions when Makar or MacKinnon aren’t at their absolute best, several other players are ready to step up and deliver crucial goals. This offensive versatility, especially as playoff games become tighter, will give the Avalanche a significant advantage due to their profound depth.

A three-game winning streak might not always seem significant, but for the league’s top team emerging from a slump, it’s highly indicative. Given their relatively easier remaining schedule, this streak could easily extend to five, six, seven, or even more victories before the playoffs commence.

Elite Goaltending Advantage

Colorado also benefits from a formidable goaltending tandem. Mackenzie Blackwood, who would be a clear starter for many NHL teams, has gradually settled into the backup role in Denver.

Scott Wedgewood has delivered an outstanding performance this season, achieving personal bests with 38 starts and 26 wins. His impressive statistics include a 2.19 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. Notably, he has conceded more than two goals in only two of his last twelve appearances, maintaining a high level of play that makes the Avalanche a formidable playoff opponent.

Health Remains Paramount

With a seemingly secure seven-point lead over the resurgent Dallas Stars in the Central Division, the Avalanche’s primary focus in the final stretch is ensuring and maintaining the health of their entire roster.

Artturi Lehkonen, sidelined with an upper-body injury, is expected to return in one to two weeks. Nicolas Roy is day-to-day with a minor ailment. The ultimate goal is to have every player as healthy as possible entering the playoffs.

A fully healthy Avalanche team is, on paper, virtually unstoppable. However, injuries are a significant equalizer in hockey. While all teams will likely face some ailments by the playoffs, a completely healthy Avalanche roster is poised to dominate their competition.
