Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Brent Burns warms up.

Veteran defenseman Brent Burns has found his new team.

The Colorado Avalanche announced on Wednesday that they have signed the 40-year-old blue-liner to a one-year contract.

Sources indicate the deal is for a base salary of $1 million for the upcoming season, with potential performance bonuses that could add up to an additional $3 million, bringing the total value to $4 million.

Burns spent the previous three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. During his tenure there, he appeared in all 246 regular-season games and played in 41 playoff matches. However, his offensive production saw a decrease last season, recording six goals and 23 assists, which were his lowest totals since the shortened 2020-21 campaign.

Known for his remarkable durability, the right-shot blueliner currently holds the longest active ironman streak among NHL players, having participated in 925 consecutive games. His streak was nearly broken in the final game of the last regular season, but he managed to play for 24 seconds against the Ottawa Senators to keep it intact.

He is currently 139 games behind the all-time consecutive games played record held by Phil Kessel.

Over the course of his extensive career, Burns has accumulated 910 points, consisting of 261 goals and 649 assists, across 1,497 regular-season games. In addition, he has contributed 24 goals and 56 assists in 135 playoff appearances.
