Ancellm Tokyo Spring 2027

Kazuya Yamachika, founder of Ancellm, defies conventional wisdom in fabric manipulation. Since its inception in 2020, the brand has pioneered techniques like shrinking leather, often going against factory recommendations.

Yamachika notes the surprise of factories at their requests. Based in Japan's renowned Kojima region, Ancellm leverages access to top textile manufacturers and a competitive pricing strategy. This has fueled rapid expansion, with the brand now available in approximately 90 international retailers, from Vancouver to Shanghai, and a new flagship store in Tokyo.

Opting out of the traditional runway this season, Ancellm presented its lookbook shot in a glass-walled train station. The backdrop visually mirrored the collection's aesthetic, transitioning from a pale blue sky to an indigo dusk. This subtle gradient was echoed in the garments' washed-out hues, complemented by vibrant touches of sunset orange, soft dusty pink knits, and deep indigo denim. The collection also featured innovative shaved leather and sulfur-dyed tailoring.

Yamachika explains a shift towards a more polished aesthetic: "We've been aiming for a slightly more refined look since the last collection. While we certainly continue to use special finishes, as we always have, we’re trying not to over-emphasize the processing itself." Each garment undergoes meticulous experimentation in his studio, with a heightened focus on drape and silhouette, imbuing the collection with a bohemian spirit.

A standout achievement is the transformation of Gobelin fabric, typically thick and rigid jacquard tapestry. Yamachika achieved a softer texture by loosening the weave, then crafted it into wide shorts and a belted jacket. These pieces are adorned with pastoral, hand-drawn toile de Jouy motifs. "The weave is just tight enough for the pattern to show through," Yamachika commented.
