How Endometriosis Changed My Beauty Routine
Receiving an endometriosis diagnosis shortly before my 27th birthday, after over a decade of severe pain, dismissal from medical professionals, and unresolved questions, was initially met with tears. However, the immediate relief was quickly replaced by apprehension. Endometriosis is not merely a reproductive condition; it's a systemic issue affecting emotional well-being, hormone regulation, and digestive health. I had a strong sense that my life was about to undergo significant changes, influencing my diet, stress management, exercise choices, and even my approach to beauty.
Dr. Felice Gersh, a highly respected women's health specialist and medical director at the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine, explains that endometriosis is a "body-wide metabolic dysfunction that impacts every organ system." She further notes, "You will experience heightened stress responses and increased pain sensitivity, and naturally, living with chronic pain alters everything from self-perception to relationships and overall quality of life."
Globally, approximately one in ten women are affected by endometriosis, though this number may be higher due to underdiagnosis. The condition suffers from insufficient funding and research, a commonality with many women's health issues. In the absence of a cure, a growing number of women are exploring holistic treatments and lifestyle modifications to alleviate their symptoms and find hope. These approaches include adopting anti-inflammatory diets, incorporating "cortisol cocktails" (stress-reducing practices), and utilizing lymphatic drainage techniques. Beyond hormone balance, these methods can be highly effective in managing endometriosis. However, as awareness grows, so does the risk of encountering misinformation and unsubstantiated claims.
Women with endometriosis often contend with heavy menstrual bleeding, persistent pain, bloating, digestive problems, and low mood. Additionally, they may experience acne, hyperpigmentation, and hair loss. The beauty industry has an opportunity to cater to this evolving consumer base, which is increasingly sensitive to conventional ingredients and more selective about product formulations. This extends beyond topical skincare to encompass wellness tools, self-care rituals, and detoxifying treatments.
Over time, I am developing a personalized beauty regimen that suits my needs. I am reducing my exposure to endocrine disruptors found in fragrances and cleaning supplies, which can exacerbate endometriosis symptoms. I've switched from non-stick cookware to cast iron or stainless steel, prioritize organic whole foods over highly processed options and those treated with pesticides (the same applies to clothing), and have eliminated alcohol and caffeine. My decision to cut out alcohol and caffeine seven years ago has since been validated by a significant study. My exercise routine focuses on low-intensity activities like yoga and Pilates, supplemented by mood-boosting dance classes. I incorporate lymphatic drainage massage to alleviate bloating and, crucially, use hormone replacement therapy (HRT), similar to what my mother used during menopause. My skincare and beauty routine is consistent and minimalist, I use non-comedogenic products to avoid pore blockages, and I haven't colored my hair in years.
