Tamme Tokyo Spring 2027: The Art of Docking in Fashion
In Japanese fashion circles, the term "docking" is commonly used, yet it remains largely unfamiliar in English. This practice involves merging elements from two distinct garments to create a single, novel piece – think of a nylon jacket paired with a cotton shirt, or a sneaker combined with a loafer. Tatsuya Tamada masterfully employs this technique in his Tamme collections.
For the past few seasons, Tamada has been drawing inspiration from his father, a police officer. He infuses the authoritative symbols found on his father's uniform into more casual, street-style attire. This approach blurs the lines between formal and casual, disciplined and relaxed. This season, Tamada delved even deeper into this paternal influence, adopting a more subtle approach to his "docking" creations. (For context, Tamada previously worked under Chitose Abe of Sacai, widely recognized as a pioneer in this garment-merging process).
Tamada explained his vision: "I wanted to take familiar elements, like the three-panel construction of a jacket, or the typical combination of a suit jacket and trousers with a dress shirt, and soften their presentation." To achieve this, he adjusted the silhouettes, rounded the shoulders, and modified lengths, thereby softening what he described as "the rigid outlines characteristic of uniform-style garments."
This season's collection showcases this innovative approach. Two grayish-blue button-up shirts were ingeniously combined into a single garment. A khaki sport coat was transformed into a field jacket, and blazers were reimagined as hoodies. Sweatpants were tailored with the elegant drape and flare more typically associated with dress trousers. Polo shirts and zip-ups featured crest-shaped cutouts on the chest, resembling badges of authority that had been removed, revealing layers of striped shirting underneath.
The result is a collection that feels like a sartorial palimpsest: a subtly grungy wardrobe that retains a hint of authority, existing in a space between conservative uniformity and individualistic rebellion. "It's about peeling back existing layers," Tamada stated. "My goal is to create a single look where different intentions and layers overlap to form one cohesive whole."
