Connor McDavid Shares Stance on Oilers Contract Negotiations

Connor McDavid speaking to media
Oilers captain Connor McDavid offers the latest update on his contract negotiations, stating he has nothing new to report and is excited for camp with his teammates.

The ongoing discussions around Connor McDavid`s contract extension have now reached training camp, though the Edmonton Oilers` star player indicates little has progressed.

Following his absence from media availability on the first day of Oilers camp Wednesday, McDavid addressed questions regarding his prominent contract talks on Thursday, offering no major developments.

“There isn`t much new to share. Of course, we consider it, we discuss it, we assess our current position and feelings,” the captain stated. He added, “As of now, nothing has truly shifted, and I’m simply eager to be here at camp and start playing. It’s a thrilling period for both our team and the entire league, and yes, we are excited.”

McDavid is slated to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2025-26 season if he postpones signing an extension. He has been able to finalize a new agreement since July 1.

The Richmond Hill, Ontario, native has played his entire professional career with Edmonton since being selected first overall in 2015. During an appearance on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast with Kyle Bukauskas and Elliotte Friedman, he reaffirmed that his main ambition remains to deliver a Stanley Cup championship to the city.

Despite this, the 28-year-old superstar has yet to secure a new deal.

Last season, McDavid only participated in 67 games due to various injuries. Nevertheless, he still managed to reach the 100-point mark for the fifth consecutive season, recording 26 goals and 74 assists.

During the postseason, as he led the Oilers to their second consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearance, he accumulated an additional seven goals and 26 assists, totaling 33 points. However, their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, as Edmonton once again lost to the Florida Panthers.

Oilers general manager Stan Bowman reaffirmed on Wednesday that McDavid`s paramount goal is to overcome past disappointments and achieve championship success in Edmonton.
