After a 12-year tenure, veteran goaltender John Gibson is leaving the Anaheim Ducks.
The Ducks have officially traded the netminder to the Detroit Red Wings, the team announced on Saturday, marking the end of a significant era for the club.
In return, Anaheim receives goaltender Petr Mrazek, a second-round draft pick in 2027, and a fourth-round draft pick in 2026.
During the past season, Gibson appeared in 29 games for the Ducks, achieving an 11-11-2 record. He posted a .912 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average, which were his best statistical performances since the 2018-19 season.
Petr Mrazek, 33, was previously acquired by the Red Wings from the Blackhawks. While in Detroit, he made five starts, going 2-2 with a 2.49 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage.
Over his career, Mrazek has played 428 NHL games for several teams, including the Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Blackhawks, and Red Wings. He holds a career record of 180-176-40 with a 2.85 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage.
Gibson, a 31-year-old native of Pittsburgh, was originally selected by the Ducks in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
He made his debut during the 2013-14 season and has since been a prominent figure in the Ducks` crease, playing 500 games for the team despite recurring injuries.
Gibson is currently under contract for two more seasons, carrying an average annual value (AAV) of $6.4 million.
The trade underscores Anaheim`s ongoing youth movement, positioning 24-year-old Lukas Dostal to potentially become the team`s full-time starting goaltender.
The Ducks are currently positioned 12th in the Western Conference standings with 54 points from 54 games, placing them significantly outside the playoff picture.
