The Edmonton Oilers will not face any disciplinary action.
The National Hockey League has concluded its inquiry into Evander Kane`s placement on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) during the previous season, as confirmed by deputy commissioner Bill Daly to reporters on Tuesday.
Kane was sidelined for the entirety of the regular season due to abdominal and knee injuries. However, he made a timely return for Game 2 of the playoffs, subsequently registering six goals and six assists across 21 games.
His absence from the regular season roster and subsequent LTIR designation freed up Kane`s $5.125 million cap hit, enabling the Oilers to acquire defenseman Jake Walman and forward Trent Frederic before the trade deadline.
Prior to last season, the NHL`s salary cap regulations did not apply during the postseason.
Nevertheless, a new postseason salary cap is being introduced this season. This change aims to eliminate a previous loophole that permitted teams, including the Oilers and the reigning champion Florida Panthers, to field playoff rosters exceeding the regular-season salary ceiling.
In June, the Oilers traded Kane, who is in the last year of his contract, to the Vancouver Canucks for a fourth-round draft pick.
