HC Traktor, a Gagarin Cup finalist, is preparing to host the Chelyabinsk Governor`s Cup on home ice. This year, the tournament will feature three teams that failed to qualify for the playoffs last season.
The “Curse” of the Governor`s Cup: A Debunked Superstition
Despite its relative youth, the Chelyabinsk Governor`s Cup has spawned a peculiar superstition: winning it supposedly dooms a team`s upcoming season. However, an analysis of the past eleven tournaments refutes this myth. The winner failed to reach the playoffs in only five instances. In the other six cases, teams advanced to various playoff stages (twice in the first, second, and third rounds), demonstrating a wide range of outcomes and no direct correlation.
Traktor`s Dominance and Past Winners
HC Traktor undeniably leads in tournament victories, having claimed the trophy five times (2013, 2016, 2019, 2022, 2023). Other single-time winners include Metallurg (2011), Neftekhimik (2012), Avangard (2015), Salavat Yulaev (2018), Avtomobilist (2021), and Amur (2024). The tournament was not held in 2014, 2017, and 2020.
The Current Field: An Uneven Matchup?
In the current edition, Traktor is the sole representative from the Chelyabinsk region and, based on last season`s results, stands as the undisputed favorite. The other three contenders—Lada, Sochi, and Amur—missed the playoffs last spring and finished in the lower ranks of the standings (20th to 22nd place), only ahead of Barys. Understandably, all these teams have undergone coaching changes. Lada, with over half its roster updated, including Alexander Khokhlyachov (who played for both Amur and Sochi last season), will be led by Boris Mironov in Chelyabinsk. Amur arrives under the guidance of Alexander Galchenyuk Sr. As for Sochi, the head coach situation remains uncertain: just ten days before preseason training began, a strange decision to terminate the contract of recently appointed Vyacheslav Kozlov was announced. He was formally listed as head coach for a month and a half but effectively did not work a single day.
Traktor`s Roster Adjustments
HC Traktor itself, aiming for a fourth consecutive tournament victory, has seen less extensive but highly significant roster changes. The club lost key players in each line: Zak Fucale, Steven Kampfer, and Maxim Shabanov. Their replacements are, respectively, Chris Driedger, Jordan Gross, and Mikhail Grigorenko. On paper, these substitutions appear to be equal in value, but their true effectiveness will only be revealed on the ice.
Tournament Format
The tournament will proceed in two stages: first, a round-robin format, followed by the top two teams competing in the final, and the remaining two playing for third place.
