Igor Severino vs. Zhalgas Zhumagulov: Champion vs. Champion at OKTAGON 89

The highly anticipated “champion vs. champion” bout between Igor Severino and Zhalgas Zhumagulov has been officially confirmed for OKTAGON 89. This monumental clash, set to take place in Bratislava on Saturday, June 6, is poised to be a centerpiece of the European MMA calendar. Bantamweight champion Igor Severino will defend his title against reigning flyweight champion Zhalgas Zhumagulov, who moves up a division with the ambition of securing a second belt and making promotional history.

OKTAGON 89 will be held at the Tipos Arena in the Slovak capital, forming a key part of the promotion’s ten-year anniversary celebrations. This rare champion-versus-champion matchup in Europe features Severino (10-1) and Zhumagulov (19-9), both entering the fight with momentum from recent title victories in their respective weight classes.

Igor Severino first gained global MMA attention in 2024 under less favorable circumstances, when he was released from the UFC after biting opponent André Lima. This incident led to a no-contest and a swift roster cut. His subsequent move to OKTAGON saw him acquire the darkly comedic nickname “Hannibal Lecter.”

His career restart in Europe has been remarkably successful: Severino debuted by defeating former OKTAGON bantamweight champion Jonas Mågård, then followed up by knocking out PFL Europe tournament winner Khurshed Kakhorov to claim the vacant bantamweight belt. At just 22 years old, he has publicly expressed his ambition to become the promotion’s pound-for-pound number one, citing his finishing ability and youth as factors that will allow him to dominate the division in the coming years.

Across the cage in Bratislava stands Zhalgas Zhumagulov, who brings a long and diverse career that includes a seven-fight UFC run, facing notable opponents like Amir Albazi and Manel Kape. He also went to a close split decision against Joshua Van in the UFC, a result that has aged well as Van ascended to a championship run after leaving the promotion.

Since signing with OKTAGON, Zhumagulov appears rejuvenated. He captured the flyweight strap in 2025 and defended it in December by finishing Czech contender David Dvořák late in the third round, reinforcing his reputation as a late-fight threat. The Kazakh veteran has explicitly stated his desire for high-risk matchups, and his move up to bantamweight for a shot at Severino’s belt aligns perfectly with this approach.

While Zhumagulov possesses prior experience at 135 pounds from regional shows in Kazakhstan and Russia, including a run through the Zhekpe Zhek Bantamweight Grand Prix earlier in his career, this will be his inaugural pursuit of a major European bantamweight title. Severino, in contrast, is still in the nascent stages of his reign at the top, lending the fight a clear generational dynamic in addition to the compelling champion-versus-champion narrative. This matchup serves as a crucial focal point for OKTAGON’s growth strategy in 2026, as the promotion expands deeper into Central Europe and targets larger arenas.

The rest of the OKTAGON 89 card complements the main event with significant bouts across several divisions. Heavyweights Lazar Todev and Martin Buday are set to clash in a fight that could influence future title discussions in the 265-pound category. Slovak veteran Robert Pukač will face Irish brawler Brian Manning in a matchup designed to thrill the local audience. Fan favorites Ronald Paradeiser, Marek Mazúch, and Radovan Úškrt are also slated for the Bratislava show against opponents yet to be confirmed, providing a strong home-market foundation beneath the international headline act.
