A former NHL superstar is reportedly planning a comeback after a two-season absence from the league.
Sources indicate that Jonathan Toews, the long-serving captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, intends to pursue a return to the National Hockey League next season.
Toews, now 37, last competed during the 2022-23 season. In August 2023, he publicly announced his decision to step away from hockey, stating his need for time and space to prioritize his health and enjoy life more fully.
The Winnipeg native also missed the entire 2020-21 season, which was impacted by pandemic restrictions, due to health challenges including recovery from COVID-19 and chronic immune response syndrome.
After leaving the NHL, Toews largely remained out of the public eye until sharing on Instagram in November about undergoing an Ayurvedic Panchakarma detox treatment in India. He later elaborated on this experience in a GQ interview, discussing the comprehensive nature of the detox, which involved various treatments such as therapeutic massages, yoga, and daily cleansing protocols.
He is now hoping to resume his highly successful career, which already includes significant achievements such as three Stanley Cup championships and two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada.
Over 15 NHL seasons, all played with Chicago, Toews appeared in 1,067 regular-season games. During this time, he accumulated 372 goals and 511 assists, establishing a reputation as `Captain Serious` due to his reliable performance and leadership in crucial moments as a center.
Speaking to GQ in December, Toews reflected on retiring players, noting, “I’ve talked to a lot of the guys that are done, and a lot of them will say that desire to be on the ice competing and to be in the locker room with the guys never goes away.” He added, “It’s just something that you have to accept when your time comes.”
However, he also expressed his personal drive: “at the same time, I think there’s a big part of me that really wants to give it my all, to get back on the ice and see where it takes me.”
