Kamaru Usman: Justin Gaethje’s Odds Against Ilia Topuria Are “Disrespectful”

UFC icon Kamaru Usman has voiced his opinion on Justin Gaethje’s significant underdog status in his upcoming bout against Ilia Topuria.

Set to headline UFC Freedom 250 on the White House lawn, Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria will clash to unify the lightweight championship. Gaethje currently holds the interim title, while Topuria enters the fight with immense momentum, having recently become a two-division UFC champion with dominant victories over top contenders like Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira.

Predictably, much of the buzz and favoritism surrounds Ilia Topuria. However, Justin Gaethje is renowned for his resilience and will undoubtedly offer a formidable challenge. Despite past challenges, Gaethje has consistently delivered elite performances, solidifying his rightful place among the sport’s best.

On a recent installment of his ‘Pound 4 Pound’ podcast, co-hosted with Henry Cejudo, Kamaru Usman shared his perspective on the betting odds assigned to Justin Gaethje for this highly anticipated encounter.

Kamaru Usman on Justin Gaethje’s Odds vs Ilia Topuria

“These odds are truly astonishing,” Usman remarked during the podcast. “They’ve listed Justin as high as a 4-1 underdog. What was he in his previous fight? A 3-1 underdog then too? Something along those lines. Justin Gaethje has frequently been cast as the underdog. It simply is what it is.”

“Regardless of who sets these odds, I sense a definite lack of respect,” Usman continued. “I experienced it myself, being the underdog in my fight [against Buckley]. The disrespect is palpable, but that’s the nature of the sport. As professional athletes, we relish these opportunities to step in and silence our detractors. I truly embrace it.”

While Ilia Topuria’s impressive recent victories undeniably justify his status as the favorite, dismissing ‘The Highlight’ would be a grave error, one that numerous opponents have made before. Should ‘El Matador’ underestimate Gaethje for even a moment, he risks facing significant repercussions.

Ultimately, this is precisely the type of thrilling matchup guaranteed to captivate fans at the White House this summer.
