Linus Ullmark, the Ottawa Senators` star goaltender, has voiced his opinions on potential changes to key NHL rules. At the recent NHL Players` Tour in Las Vegas, Ullmark suggested modifications to both the format of regular-season overtime and the process for evaluating goaltender interference.
Rethinking Overtime: Less Shootouts, More Play
Ullmark proposed extending the overtime period beyond the current five minutes, drawing a parallel to the longer format seen in events like the 4 Nations Face-Off. His rationale is that a lengthier overtime would likely decrease the frequency of shootouts, a system he openly admits to having a “love-and-hate” relationship with. From a goaltender`s perspective, he explained, a strong performance could be undermined by the unpredictable nature of a shootout, where three goals allowed can negate an otherwise perfect game. He finds the rush of winning a shootout exhilarating but the sting of losing due to one disheartening.
Clarifying Goaltender Interference with Expert Review
Beyond overtime, Ullmark also offered a solution to the ongoing debate surrounding goaltender interference. He advocated for the appointment of a specialized “goal watcher/referee” located in Toronto. This individual, equipped with a deep understanding of the goaltender`s perspective, would be responsible for making objective, black-and-white determinations on interference calls, akin to the clarity provided for offside rulings.
Ullmark emphasized that the current ambiguity in goaltender interference rules makes coach`s challenges feel like a “gamble.” He desires a system where the rules are exceptionally clear-cut, or at least account for the existing “grey area.” He cited instances where inches and differing perspectives lead to inconsistent calls, particularly when a goalie is outside the crease but impeded while attempting to return. While the league has acknowledged the inherent subjectivity of these calls, with NHL VP Kris King referring to them as “snowflakes” due to their unique circumstances, Ullmark seeks greater clarity to remove uncertainty.
Ullmark`s Performance and the Season Ahead
In his debut season with the Senators, Ullmark posted a .910 save percentage and a 2.72 goals-against average, along with a career-best four shutouts. The Senators are set to kick off their 2025-26 season on October 9 in Tampa Bay.
