Negotiations between restricted free agent defenseman Luke Hughes and the New Jersey Devils have reportedly reached an impasse, as both parties hold differing views on the ideal length for his new contract. The disagreement centers on the term of the extension, according to a recent report by NJ.com`s Ryan Novozinsky.
The primary point of contention appears to be the duration of the deal. Sources close to the Hughes camp indicate a strong preference for a five-year agreement. This particular term would strategically align Luke`s contract expiry with that of his brother, Jack Hughes, potentially setting up both siblings to become unrestricted free agents concurrently during the 2030-31 season. Jack Hughes notably secured an eight-year, $64-million deal with the Devils in 2021.
Conversely, the Devils organization is reportedly pushing for alternative options: either a shorter, three-year “bridge” deal, which would give them more flexibility, or a long-term commitment in the form of an eight-year extension.
Luke Hughes, currently 21 years old, has quickly established himself as a key player over his two full seasons with the Devils. In 155 career games, he has recorded 17 goals and 76 assists, accumulating a total of 93 points. While his plus/minus rating stands at minus-34, he has averaged slightly over 21 minutes of ice time per game, highlighting his significant role on the team`s blue line and his growing importance to the franchise.
