Ilya Nabokov, goaltender for Metallurg Magnitogorsk, shared his thoughts in an interview about playing against Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin during the “Match of the Year” exhibition game. In the match, a KHL team faced off against a selection of Russian NHL stars, with the NHL stars ultimately winning with a score of 15-3.
“Alexander is a legend, and I have great respect for everything he`s accomplished,” Nabokov stated. “I`m fortunate to be witnessing this era, especially seeing him break records. I wasn`t upset when he scored on me in the `Match of the Year.` In fact, I`ll be proud to be able to say that Ovechkin scored on me. However, if I ever get the chance to face him in an actual NHL season game, I certainly won`t make it easy for him to score.”
