Montreal`s transit agency has announced that city buses will not be able to display the NHL hockey slogan “Go! Canadiens Go!” anytime soon. Previously, the agency had replaced this phrase on electronic bus signs with “Allez! Canadiens Allez!” to comply with the provincial language watchdog`s regulations. Following public outcry, the language office gave the transit agency approval in June to use the English word “go” on display signs to cheer on the city`s NHL team.
However, the agency states that the original message cannot be restored on buses until at least winter, during the regularly scheduled period for signage updates. The electronic displays on each of the city`s more than 1,000 buses require manual modification. Agency spokesperson Isabelle Tremblay explained that there are insufficient funds in the budget to update the signage earlier.
