A new documentary series focusing on the Edmonton Oilers` dominant era in the NHL during the 1980s is being developed with input from Ryan Reynolds` production company, Maximum Effort.
Titled `The Great Ones`, the series promises “an unparalleled look at the lives and careers” of the players instrumental in the Oilers securing five Stanley Cups from 1984 to 1990, according to its producers.
This five-part production will include recent interviews with key figures from the Oilers dynasty, such as Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, alongside perspectives from opponents, commentators, team management, and others involved backstage.
Maximum Effort is partnering with Score G Productions, Fennessey Films, Super Channel, and OEG Sports & Entertainment to create the series.
The director for the project is Austin Andrews, an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker known for directing the Netflix drama series `Julie and the Phantoms`.
Super Channel is scheduled to premiere the series in the winter of 2027.
Currently, the Oilers are competing for their first Stanley Cup since 1990, facing the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final.
Maximum Effort is also known for the sports documentary series `Welcome to Wrexham`, which chronicles the journey of the Welsh soccer team co-owned by Reynolds and actor Rob McElhenney. That series is currently in its fourth season on FX.
