NHL Free Agency Winners and Losers: Panthers on Top Yet Again

When July 1st finally arrived, the anticipation surrounding NHL free agency felt somewhat subdued. Reflecting on the events of the preceding season helps explain why the market wasn`t as chaotic as some years.

While free agency might have been quiet in terms of blockbuster moves on day one, the 2025 trade deadline was exceptionally active and saw significant player movement. Much of the activity from early March, whether directly or indirectly, lessened the usual excitement associated with July 1st by taking major names off the board.

A major shocker on deadline day was Mikko Rantanen`s second trade in a short period. This move was quickly followed by him signing a significant eight-year contract extension with the Dallas Stars as part of the trade package.

This substantial transaction meant free agency lost one of its key potential headliners, a player who would have undoubtedly commanded immense attention and salary.

Mitch Marner was, naturally, the other star player expected to draw significant interest on July 1st. However, in a surprising turn, Marner`s situation became linked to Rantanen`s when Carolina and Toronto explored trading the pending unrestricted free agents. Despite Marner using his trade protection to stay in Toronto initially, discussions with other clubs, like the Vegas Golden Knights, did occur. Apparently, the interest shown by the Knights during those trade talks was appealing enough to ultimately influence him towards a sign-and-trade move to Vegas before he officially hit the open market.

Another huge moment at the deadline was Brad Marchand`s trade from Boston to Florida just before the cutoff. Considering how successful things turned out for him and the Panthers afterwards, where he was a vital part of a Stanley Cup-winning team, it`s a valid question whether he would have truly committed to staying there instead of testing the free agency waters he seemed destined for after leaving Boston.

The undeniably positive energy and celebration after the championship parade undoubtedly played a significant role in convincing Marchand, and even key defenseman Aaron Ekblad, to prioritize finding a way to remain with the Panthers organization.

These two significant players, among others, further reduced the pool of major free-agent targets available on July 1st, contributing to the day`s relative quietness.
