Connor Hellebuyck, the Winnipeg Jets’ goaltender, has been suspended for failing to report to training camp. He recently went public with a trade request and is enforcing it by not participating in team activities.
While any NHL team would desire Hellebuyck, widely considered the world's best goalie, reports indicate the Jets are not receiving the offers they anticipated. This is partly due to teams knowing the Jets are in a weaker negotiating position after Hellebuyck's public request. Another factor is that teams are generally reluctant to give up significant assets for goaltenders, meaning the Jets will likely not get fair value. With the regular season approaching, many teams are too close to the salary cap to accommodate Hellebuyck's $8.5 million cap hit.
The Edmonton Oilers have been mentioned as a potential suitor, given their consistent pursuit of a Stanley Cup and their long-standing need for a reliable starting goalie. However, acquiring Hellebuyck would be a misstep for the Oilers' management.
Oilers Face Roster Imbalance with Hellebuyck Acquisition
The primary challenge for the Oilers in trading for Hellebuyck is managing the salary cap. After signing Alex Formenton to a one-year deal worth $850,000, General Manager Stan Bowman has just over $1 million remaining. To make a Hellebuyck deal feasible, the Oilers would need to offload substantial salary. Players like Tristan Jarry or Trent Frederic might be considered, but their contracts are unlikely to interest the Jets.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' name has also been mentioned, but his inclusion in such a trade is highly improbable. Nugent-Hopkins has played his entire 1,031-game career with Edmonton and possesses a full no-movement clause, making it unlikely he would agree to waive it to leave a contender for a team on the playoff bubble.
Other high-salary players on the Oilers' roster, including McDavid, Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Evan Bouchard, and Jake Walman, present further complications. McDavid, Draisaitl, and Walman have full no-movement clauses, while Hyman has a 10-team trade list. Bouchard is the only player without trade protection, but trading him for Hellebuyck would simply shift the problem rather than solve it.
Goaltending Needs Have Been Addressed
Furthermore, the Oilers' management is unlikely to want to disrupt their current goaltending strategy. This offseason, Bowman worked to improve the position by acquiring Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres and signing Frederik Andersen to a one-year deal. They also retain Jarry, who Bowman acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins last season.
While none of these three goalies match Hellebuyck's caliber, they are significantly more affordable, a crucial factor for a contending team like the Oilers. The team made substantial efforts to bolster its goaltending and should now observe how these acquisitions perform.
The idea of landing a top-tier goalie like Hellebuyck is appealing, but it is currently unfeasible for the Oilers. They lack the necessary cap space and the movable assets required to acquire him from the Jets.
