The Rise and Fall of the Rangers' "Kid Line"

Aptly named "The Kid Line," the combination of Alexis Lafrenière, Kaapo Kakko, and Filip Chytil became the team's most potent offensive unit during the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Their impressive playoff performance sparked widespread discussion, leading many to believe these players would finally fulfill the team's high expectations. However, this brief period of success proved unsustainable. Less than four years later, only one member of that line remains with the Rangers.

A Standout Performance in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs

At the outset of the playoffs, this trio was designated as the team's third line, playing behind established stars like Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad. The strategy was for them to face the opposition's less formidable players, a role they embraced and excelled in. During a critical Game 5 against the Pittsburgh Penguins, when the Rangers were trailing 3-1 in the series and 2-0 at home, it was this line that ignited the comeback, with Chytil scoring the game-winning goal. Throughout the Rangers' run to the Eastern Conference Final, this line consistently delivered, even if their individual offensive statistics didn't match those of players like Zibanejad.

The 2022 playoffs marked a true breakout performance for Chytil, in particular, as he emerged as one of the team's top goal scorers. In 20 playoff games, he recorded seven goals and nine points, a scoring touch he carried into the following season where he achieved a career-high of 22 goals. While Lafrenière and Kakko did not match Chytil's offensive output during this run, their contributions were equally vital. They demonstrated their potential to be effective players when placed in the right roles. Although the momentum gained from this playoff run ultimately did not last, it was a thrilling spectacle at the time and offered a glimpse of a hopeful future for the franchise.

Kakko and Chytil Traded Three Years Later

The "Kid Line" was reunited at various points in the subsequent seasons, but they never recaptured the magic of their 2022 success. After securing the Presidents' Trophy and reaching the Eastern Conference Final again in 2024, ultimately losing in six games, the Rangers opted to maintain their core roster for the 2024-25 season. Despite an initial strong start of 12-4-1, the team's performance declined significantly in late November and early December, leading to a series of trades. Kaapo Kakko was sent to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for defenseman Will Borgen, a 2025 third-round pick, and a 2025 sixth-round pick. This transaction occurred just days after Kakko was a healthy scratch under then-head coach Peter Laviolette and openly expressed his displeasure to the media.

Filip Chytil, who had an outstanding 2022-23 season, missed a significant portion of the following year due to a concussion, which was not the first of his career. He did participate in some playoff games during their 2024 Eastern Conference Final run, but he was a shadow of his former self. In January 2025, he was traded as part of the package that brought J.T. Miller back to New York from the Vancouver Canucks. It's disheartening to witness a player with so much potential be hampered by injuries, but it may also indicate that the Rangers' decision to move on was justified.

Lafrenière: The Last Man Standing

Alexis Lafrenière is the sole remaining member of the "Kid Line," and he continues to strive for consistent play and to fully establish his game. His most successful season to date was 2023-24, when he tallied 28 goals and 57 points. He subsequently signed a seven-year contract extension, but with the team struggling around him, his production dipped in 2024-25 to 17 goals and 45 points. He experienced a slow start to the most recent season, but after Artemi Panarin was traded, he was given consistent top-line and top power-play unit minutes, transforming into the team's best player down the stretch. He concluded the season with 24 goals and 57 points, matching his career high.

Lafrenière found excellent chemistry playing alongside Mika Zibanejad and Gabe Perreault. If they can replicate their performance from the latter half of last season, the Rangers may have discovered their new top line. It has taken Lafrenière considerable time to make his mark in the NHL. While he may not ultimately live up to the expectations associated with being a first-overall draft pick, he remains a valuable player for the Rangers moving forward. Although it is regrettable that he, Chytil, and Kakko could not develop into the future core many envisioned, Lafrenière still possesses the potential to be a key component as the Rangers aim to regain their status as playoff contenders.

The "Kid Line" provided Rangers fans with a surge of hope and numerous fond memories. They were young, exciting, and embodied the team's spirit during the 2022 playoffs. Had anyone suggested at the time that within four years, two of them would no longer be with the team, they would have been dismissed as outlandish. However, that is the current reality: Kakko and Chytil have both moved on, and perhaps the Rangers are better for it. It was an enjoyable chapter while it lasted, but the "Kid Line" was never destined for longevity, and that is simply the nature of the game.
