CALGARY – Rasmus Andersson has always shown a readiness to put the team first. The 28-year-old Swedish defenseman for the Calgary Flames, who impressively ranked fourth in NHL shot blocks last season, faced considerable criticism and speculation about his worth as a looming free agent throughout the summer.
On Tuesday, Andersson took the opportunity to finally address the summer`s persistent rumors and set the record straight. Even though contract extension talks between Andersson and the Flames have reportedly stalled, he firmly stated that he has neither requested a trade nor indicated a desire to leave Calgary, nor has he placed the team in a difficult position.
Andersson, with one year remaining on his team-friendly $4.55 million annual contract, expressed his frustration, stating, “The thing that bothers you is fake information that comes out.”
He continued, specifically denying reports suggesting he would only sign with a single team: “I saw some reports that I would only sign with one team, and this and that. I mean, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Me and Connie (GM Craig Conroy) have had a few conversations over the summer, and I would never handcuff him and give him one team.” This statement underscores his commitment to the organization and his trust in General Manager Craig Conroy`s ability to navigate future negotiations fairly.
