Matthew Schaefer donned his New York Islanders jersey, numbered 48, for the inaugural time on Wednesday. His ambition is to continue wearing it when the team kicks off its season on October 9th.

Speaking at the Rookie Showcase in Washington, Schaefer conveyed his philosophy: “Opportunities aren`t simply handed to you; they must be earned. I am fully committed to earning my place on the team, and that is precisely my goal entering training camp. Significant hard work lies ahead.” He added, “While it will require dedication over time, I am prepared and eagerly anticipate the start of camp. Once things commence, my excitement will be immense.”

The June draft`s top pick, defenseman Schaefer, participated alongside 30 other rookies at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex, the NHL team`s practice facility. Part of the young player`s obligations included sitting for his initial headshot, intended for the EA Sports NHL video game and Upper Deck trading cards.

However, the genuine challenge awaits him upon his arrival in Long Island for training camp. Historically, the last three top draft selections have successfully secured roster spots directly from training camp, with the exception of Buffalo Sabres defenseman Owen Power, who opted to return to college in 2022.

Schaefer, whose last competitive play was halted by a broken collarbone on December 27th, dedicated his summer to an intensive off-season training program. This group featured notable NHL veterans such as Nazem Kadri (Calgary Flames forward), Sean Monahan (Columbus Blue Jackets forward), and Scott Laughton (Toronto Maple Leafs center).

Reflecting on the experience, Schaefer commented, “Their work ethic is truly inspiring, prompting you to absorb as much as possible from them. Competing against such high-caliber players significantly elevates my game, especially in scenarios like a 2-on-1 where they`re attempting to score, and I`m striving to defend. It`s about enhancing my play both on and off the ice, and constantly challenging myself against them. As they execute plays, I improve by countering them, and their constant drive to win fuels a highly competitive yet incredibly beneficial environment.”

Schaefer will celebrate his eighteenth birthday this Friday, positioning him as the youngest participant at the Showcase. In contrast, his teammate Marc Gatcomb, who turned twenty-six in July, is the oldest.

Gatcomb, having played 39 games in his debut season, expressed the Islanders organization`s collective enthusiasm for welcoming Schaefer into the team. He added, “Securing the first overall pick is a monumental achievement, and bringing in someone of his talent, caliber, and admirable personality makes us all extremely pleased and thrilled to have him.”

“He`s an incredibly genuine and humble young man,” Gatcomb remarked. “You couldn`t ask for someone nicer. He maintains a cheerful demeanor and always has a smile, regardless of the situation. My impression so far is that he is an exceptionally good person.”

Before long, this promising young talent could be commanding a defensive position in the NHL.
