Alistair Overeem Urges Conor McGregor to Retire, Citing Career's End Five Years Ago

Combat sports legend Alistair Overeem has advised Conor McGregor to consider retirement, asserting that McGregor's physical prime ended half a decade ago.

McGregor, who has a history of injuries and has undergone multiple surgeries, most recently dealt with ACL and meniscus damage sustained during his fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329. His return to the octagon after a five-year hiatus was cut short just over a minute into the bout.

Despite McGregor's stated intention to return for a "Last Dance" in 2027, Overeem, a former K-1 World Grand Prix champion and Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, expressed his doubts in an interview with Bloody Elbow. Overeem believes McGregor is no longer the fighter he once was.

"His body was finished five years ago, so his return, to me, was nothing more than a money grab facilitated by the UFC," Overeem stated. "I don’t see anything left for him in combat sports; he’s done. I think we need to go a step further: if you’re going to fight or be an athlete, you need to maintain a certain lifestyle. You can’t be out drinking alcohol; you need to be dedicated. I just don't see that with him."

"You look at his face – when you’re a fighter, you can look at another man and kind of see what’s going on – and he’s just not the same guy; he’s not a fighter. He's simply not. I'm sure he can still throw a punch and maybe beat up some beginners, but for him to perform on the biggest stage? With all due respect, I don’t see that happening for him anymore."

There have been various interpretations of McGregor's knee injury in July, with some suggesting a pre-existing condition and others attributing it to the way he landed during a jumping kick attempt. Regardless of the cause, Overeem is convinced that McGregor's days as a prizefighter are over.
