Eddie Hearn: Conor Benn Isn't World-Class After Ryan Garcia Loss
Eddie Hearn stated he doesn't intend to criticize Conor Benn despite their public split, but he questions Benn's potential to secure a world championship.
Benn faced Ryan Garcia for the WBC welterweight title on September 12 in Las Vegas. The fight ended abruptly for Benn in the second round after he was knocked down and subsequently stopped by Garcia.
After a decade with Hearn's Matchroom, Benn's prominent fight under the Zuffa Boxing banner has led many to question his future marquee matchups based on his performance.
In an interview with iFL TV, Hearn suggested Benn did not perform at his best on fight night.
Hearn noted his prior prediction that Garcia would win within three rounds. He explained his familiarity with Benn throughout his career, observing that Benn appeared "lost" and unlike himself during the bout. Hearn speculated weight management or issues related to cutting weight might have been factors.
Despite this, Hearn doubts Benn will ever win a world title.
Hearn acknowledged his difficult position, as his role typically involves promoting fighters. However, he stated that while he believes Benn is a good fighter who has significantly improved and earned his opportunities, he doesn't consider him "world class." Hearn thinks Benn's current level isn't sufficient for winning a world title, particularly in a weight class he feels is not ideal for him.
Benn released a statement after the loss, indicating he will take time off to be with his family. Hearn anticipates Benn's career may conclude within the next year or so.
