Islam Makhachev Reflects on Dominant UFC Title Win and Legacy
Islam Makhachev has shared his thoughts on his commanding victory to claim the UFC Welterweight Championship against Jack Della Maddalena. The fight, which took place in November 2025 as the main event of UFC 325, saw Makhachev seize the opportunity to become a two-division champion.
Makhachev described the bout as a grappling masterclass, where he controlled Maddalena for five rounds to secure the welterweight title. He recalled that the ease of his initial takedown against Maddalena signaled that it would be a challenging night for his opponent.
"I wanted to be a double champion. It's good for my legacy," Makhachev stated during the UFC 330 countdown show. "I remember the first takedown, how easily it came, and I understood it was going to be a long night for Jack."
Currently, Makhachev is preparing for his first defense of the welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 on August 15th in Philadelphia. Garry has expressed confidence in his striking abilities, asserting their superiority over Makhachev's and aiming for a knockout.
While Maddalena was largely focused on defending takedowns, Makhachev anticipates a different dynamic with Garry. He suggested he might take more risks in his upcoming bout. Fans are curious to see how Garry will handle Makhachev's relentless pressure and his ability to defend takedowns long enough to strike effectively.
Garry's grappling skills were tested in late 2024 against Shavkat Rakhmonov, where despite not winning, he put up a competitive fight. The upcoming bout against Makhachev will reveal if Garry has made the necessary adjustments to face an elite opponent.
