UFC Veterans Urge Restraint in Judging Anthony Smith Amidst Arrest
Former UFC fighter Matt Brown has voiced his strong disapproval of the public's immediate condemnation of Anthony Smith following his recent arrest. Smith, a retired UFC contender and current analyst, was taken into custody late last month in Nebraska, facing serious charges including terroristic threats, domestic violence, and first-degree false imprisonment. Police reports indicate allegations of Smith threatening his wife and attempting to run her over after an altercation at a bar.
Speaking on MMAFighting.com's "The Fighter vs. The Writer," Brown expressed his frustration with fans who he believes are making rash judgments based solely on headlines and social media. "This one does cut a little bit deeper than a lot of these other incidents that happen," Brown stated. He highlighted his personal positive experiences with Smith, describing him as a "respectable guy" and "always been a great guy to me."
Brown found the fan reaction particularly off-putting. "These fans, I’ll say it as clear as I can: These motherf*ckers need to lay off Anthony Smith," he urged. While acknowledging that the situation is serious and accountability is necessary, Brown stressed the lack of complete information available to the public. "We don’t know what happened... But we weren’t there and neither was 100 percent of the people that are confidently judging his life from headlines and social media posts. That’s where I’d like to chime in be like hey, you motherf*ckers, headlines and social media posts are not real life."
Smith is reportedly facing a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years if convicted. Other prominent figures in the MMA community, including Smith's former opponent Jon Jones, have offered their perspectives, with Jones suggesting spiritual guidance for Smith during this challenging time.
