After a distinguished career spanning 14 seasons in the National Hockey League, defenceman Tyson Barrie officially announced his retirement from professional hockey on Monday.
The 34-year-old native of Victoria, British Columbia, leaves the game having played 809 NHL games. During his career, he proudly represented five teams: the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, and Calgary Flames. Renowned for his potent offensive abilities as a blueliner, Barrie concludes his professional journey with an impressive tally of 109 goals, 396 assists, accumulating over 500 career points.
Barrie`s NHL career commenced after being drafted 64th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2009, making his debut in the 2011-12 season. He swiftly established himself as a formidable power-play specialist, particularly during his impactful tenure with the Edmonton Oilers, where he was instrumental in leading the league`s top-ranked power-play unit in 2021.
In his final season, Barrie had initially signed a one-year contract with the Calgary Flames after securing a spot via a professional tryout. However, he was later placed on waivers and ultimately concluded his playing year with the Calgary Wranglers in the American Hockey League (AHL).
