Wilder vs Chisora: Boxing Glove Dispute Nearly Cancels Heavyweight Fight

The highly anticipated heavyweight clash between Deontay Wilder and Derek Chisora faced a significant threat of cancellation just hours before the scheduled fight night, due to a severe disagreement over boxing gloves.

This bout, crucial for the heavyweight division and potentially marking the end of Chisora’s career, was overshadowed by technical concerns regarding the equipment. Promoter Kalle Sauerland confirmed the escalating tensions at the weigh-in, stating, “Yes, there were some dramas this morning at the weigh in. There are some issues around the gloves, I can confirm that.”

Reports indicated that Wilder’s team raised objections, alleging Chisora had chosen a brand of gloves not officially approved.

Furthermore, questions arose concerning the weight of the gloves, which reportedly seemed closer to 12 ounces rather than the standard 10 ounces typically used in heavyweight competitions. This issue generated considerable friction between both camps, briefly casting doubt on whether the fight would proceed.

Sauerland attempted to de-escalate the situation, noting, “It’s not the first time there has been a flare up around big heavyweight fights and the gloves.” Nevertheless, the extent of this last-minute disagreement positioned it as one of the most substantial controversies in recent heavyweight boxing history.

A Familiar Controversy in Heavyweight Boxing

Such glove controversies are not new to either boxer, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the current predicament.

Wilder himself has been involved in notable disputes, particularly after his fights with Tyson Fury, where he made accusations of glove tampering. These allegations garnered significant media attention at the time and remain a frequently discussed topic in modern boxing lore.

Chisora has also encountered similar problems previously. In a past fight, the Fly Sports boxing gloves he wore caused concern when their color began to distort during the match. This incident led to an investigation by the World Boxing Council (WBC), resulting in a temporary ban for the brand.

Commenting on the ongoing issue, Sauerland reiterated that discussions were in progress and the matter was being managed behind the scenes. He again stressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “There are some issues around the gloves,” while expressing confidence in its eventual resolution.

With officials intervening and both teams engaged in talks, the fight ultimately remained on schedule. However, this pre-fight drama has already infused an additional layer of intensity into an already high-stakes encounter, ensuring all eyes will be fixed on the heavyweights once they finally step into the ring.
