Zayne Parekh: Earning His Place with the Flames, Not Taking Opportunity for Granted

CALGARY — For Zayne Parekh, the Calgary Flames` promising prospect, a successful season isn`t solely about accumulating statistics.

Having recorded junior league numbers in the past two seasons that rival legendary Bobby Orr`s achievements, the Flames` first-round pick recently shared in a conversation that his primary objective is straightforward: “Playing in the NHL the whole year, that`s the goal,” stated the 19-year-old defenseman, who is set to be a key player as the Flames` training camp kicks off on Thursday.

Parekh clarified that while he aims to maximize his offensive output, a high point total won`t be the ultimate measure of success for him. “What`s important is I continue to develop and get better,” he emphasized, specifically referring to his performance as a Flame.

Deemed too young for the AHL but too skilled to rejoin his OHL team in Saginaw, Parekh is widely expected to secure a full-time roster spot with the Flames this season.

However, Parekh himself refrains from such assumptions. This humble perspective showcases a notable maturity, particularly after he described feeling “humbled” leaving last fall`s training camp as the ninth overall pick.

“I`m not guaranteed a spot on the team, so my camp is going to determine whether I’m on the team or not,” Parekh asserted, maintaining his characteristic grin. “I’ve got to earn my spot. That means showing up early every day and doing the little things right. And when that day comes, if that day comes, I`ll be pretty happy. But I`m not there yet.”
