Former world boxing champion Joe Cordina was cleared of assaulting a man he punched outside a petrol station in Pentwyn, Cardiff. The incident in February had led to the 34-year-old being denied entry to the US for a WBO lightweight title fight.

Cardiff Magistrates' Court heard the case. District Judge Charlotte Murphy ruled Cordina not guilty of assault by beating against Jamie O'Brien, 33. The judge stated she was 'satisfied' Cordina acted in self-defense, deeming his single punch 'proportionate in the circumstances'. She noted that the CCTV footage, viewed in slow motion, did not reflect the split-second decision Cordina had to make after being shoulder-barged.

Cordina, a two-time IBF super-featherweight champion, said on social media he was 'hugely relieved' and now focused on returning to the ring. He had been refueling his vehicle when O'Brien, who was sitting near the exit, approached him. Cordina initially thought O'Brien wanted a photo. After Cordina called him over, O'Brien reportedly said, 'You come here,' then barged Cordina. Cordina described feeling threatened, adding that O'Brien had his hands in his pockets.

CCTV showed O'Brien shoulder-barging Cordina, who then punched O'Brien, knocking him down. The two exchanged further words and blows. O'Brien had previously pleaded guilty to assault by beating.

The judge reiterated her findings, stating the force used was necessary and proportionate, rejecting any suggestion of retaliation. She emphasized Cordina's long public career and daily interactions. Ultimately, the judge found the prosecution had not proven their case to the required standard and dismissed the charge.

The court had previously found no case to answer on a second assault charge. Cordina testified that a criminal conviction would likely cost him his boxing license, a fact that influenced his behavior daily. He expressed his gratitude on Instagram to his legal team, family, friends, and supporters, calling it a 'difficult period'. He looks forward to dedicating his energy to training and his next fight.
