Carlos Prates, currently on a three-fight winning streak that includes two knockouts of former UFC champions, has declared his next target: the welterweight title. He has explicitly stated that he will not accept any other fights until he gets his shot at the championship.
“The Nightmare” Prates aims to challenge the winner of the anticipated Islam Makhachev vs. Ian Machado Garry bout, which could take place in August. If Garry emerges victorious and claims the lightweight title, Prates has indicated a mutual interest in a rematch held in Brazil.
Meanwhile, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, Ilia Topuria, is scheduled to face interim titleholder Justin Gaethje on June 14 at the White House. Topuria is confident in his ability to defeat “The Highlight” in the first round and subsequently intends to move up in weight divisions, aiming for three-division glory. His ultimate goal is to confront pound-for-pound king and welterweight champion Makhachev.
However, Prates has now presented a new proposition for the undefeated knockout artist, known as “El Matador.”
Carlos Prates Wants to Face Ilia Topuria After Capturing the UFC Welterweight Throne
During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Prates voiced his strong desire to confront Topuria should the latter decide to move up to the welterweight division (170 pounds). Prates envisions a clash with Topuria as both a “superfight” and a lucrative “money fight.” His plan is to call out Topuria for a major showdown immediately after he claims the welterweight belt. He shared with Helwani:
“I’m thinking about getting the belt and then maybe asking Topuria if he wants to come to 170. Let’s do this. Let’s dance.”
