Kamaru Usman Backs Sean Strickland to End Khamzat Chimaev’s Wrestling Dominance
Former UFC champion Kamaru Usman has shared his insights on the highly anticipated middleweight title fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland, suggesting that Strickland might be the one to challenge Chimaev's formidable wrestling control. This blockbuster clash, scheduled as the main event for UFC 328 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, will mark Chimaev's first defense of his newly acquired middleweight belt, won at UFC 319.
Sean Strickland earned his shot at the title by defeating Anthony Hernandez in a title eliminator last month and immediately called out the reigning champion. Given the rapidly growing rivalry and fan interest, the UFC promptly finalized this compelling matchup.
Usman, who has previously faced Chimaev in the octagon, albeit on short notice, acknowledged Chimaev's exceptional talent while also pointing out a potential weakness. "Khamzat Chimaev is one of those very, very special guys. He has the ability to do these great things, but at the same time we’re still waiting for a complete performance because he almost uses one skill to dominate and win these fights," Usman remarked during an appearance on the Pound 4 Pound Show. He further elaborated, "We’re still kind of waiting for that one guy that’s going to stop that one dominant thing that Khamzat does, and then we see all of his arsenal." Usman’s comments suggest that Chimaev, despite his wrestling prowess, has yet to face a resilient wrestler with superior takedown defense capable of forcing him to utilize his full skill set.
Sean Strickland remains confident in his abilities, toughness, and mental fortitude to overcome Khamzat Chimaev in what is expected to be a heated grudge match. Their rivalry has intensified due to personal barbs, significantly boosting fan anticipation and adding an extra layer of intensity to the upcoming fight.
UFC Veteran Questions Sean Strickland's Title Shot Over Nasirroudine Imavov
Before Sean Strickland secured his title shot against Anthony Hernandez, it was Nasirroudine Imavov who appeared to be next in line. Imavov and Khamzat Chimaev had verbally agreed to fight, but it seems the UFC ultimately opted for the more hyped matchup with Strickland.
Former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad openly discussed the situation, expressing his view that it was unfair to the Frenchman. "You gotta feel for Imavov. He earned the title shot. But then that trash talk, stupidity, and the era we live in now where Strickland talks his way into a title shot," stated Belal Muhammad on his YouTube channel.
Throughout UFC history, numerous fighters, including notable figures like Conor McGregor, Chael Sonnen, and Colby Covington, have effectively used trash-talking to advance their careers and secure lucrative title opportunities. The central question now is whether Sean Strickland can successfully back up his bold words against the formidable Khamzat Chimaev.
