BKFC Bantamweight Title Vacant After Justin Ibarrola Steps Down; Jamel Herring vs. Nate Maness to Fight for Crown
The BKFC bantamweight championship is now vacant following former titleholder Justin Ibarrola's decision to relinquish the belt. Promoter David Feldman confirmed this development, stating Ibarrola felt unprepared for the responsibilities of a champion and wished to explore other combat sports, including gloved boxing.
Feldman, speaking on the matter, emphasized that the decision came from Ibarrola himself. He clarified that Ibarrola had fought outside the organization (a boxing event where he won) but that this was not the reason for the vacancy. Feldman reiterated Ibarrola's sentiment of not feeling "matured and ready enough" for the role, while expressing respect for the ex-champ and confirming Ibarrola would still fight for BKFC, just not as a champion. He noted Ibarrola's desire for more flexibility, which is incompatible with being a reigning champion.
Former Champion Justin Ibarrola Shares His Perspective
Ibarrola corroborated Feldman's explanation, simply stating his desire to "move around" and not be constrained by the championship role while still fighting under the BKFC banner.
With the belt now open, a new championship fight has already been scheduled. Former WBO super featherweight champion Jamel Herring will face ex-UFC flyweight Nate Maness at BKFC 89 on May 22nd in Palm Desert, California, to crown the new bantamweight king.
