Humanoid Robots' Biggest Hurdle: Human Superiority

Industry leaders speaking at the World Robot Conference in Beijing highlighted that the primary obstacle for humanoid robots is still the refinement of their technology. Wang Xingxing, founder of Unitree, noted that robots currently lack the efficiency of humans and require significant time to acquire new skills, which presents a bottleneck for the sector. This observation comes in the wake of Unitree's substantial IPO surge and subsequent stock decline, underscoring the difficulties for humanoid robots entering the human workforce.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission recently added foreign-made advanced robotic devices, including humanoids, to a list that restricts imports into the United States. While the directive did not name a specific country, it allows for the import of previously approved models. However, Jeff Burnstein, president of the Association for Advancing Automation, suggested that this restriction currently has a limited impact due to the low deployment of humanoids in the U.S. He pointed out that autonomous mobile robots are more prevalent in factories. Burnstein added that companies seeking increased efficiency are primarily focused on practical solutions rather than the specific form factor of a robot. The onus, he stated, is on humanoid robot developers to demonstrate that their products are affordable, safe, and ready for immediate use.

Keenon, a startup, is developing humanoids for tasks like hotel laundry services, often in conjunction with simpler delivery robots. According to COO Wan Bin, achieving 50% or even 80% task completion is relatively manageable. However, reaching a 99.9% success rate is a significant engineering and training challenge. Keenon has already delivered over 100,000 robots and anticipates exceeding 150,000 units by the end of next year.
