Japan's Inflation Rate Climbs to Yearly High Amidst Rising Energy Costs
Japan's headline inflation surged to 1.9% in July, marking the highest rate observed this year. This increase is primarily attributed to escalating energy costs, exacerbated by the conflict in the Middle East.
Core inflation, which excludes fresh food prices but includes energy, met expectations by registering at 1.8%.
Despite government subsidies, energy prices experienced their first increase since November 2025. This rise is a direct consequence of elevated oil prices stemming from the Middle Eastern conflict. This trend was reflected in wholesale inflation, which stood at 7.2% for July, with electricity charges being the most significant contributing factor.
Fresh food prices also saw a substantial jump, rising by 7% compared to a 3.9% increase in June.
Analysts have previously indicated that the relatively subdued consumer inflation is partly due to subsidies implemented by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's administration, aimed at cushioning consumers from the impact of higher energy prices.
The 'core-core' inflation rate, which excludes both fresh food and energy prices, was recorded at 1.9%.
The Bank of Japan, in its outlook report last month, cautioned that core inflation is projected to exceed 2% from the latter half of its 2026 fiscal year, which spans from September to March. This forecast is based on factors including wage increases being passed on to selling prices, rising crude oil prices, and the recent depreciation of the yen. The central bank anticipates inflation to moderate towards 2% as oil prices decline.
