Japan's July Exports Surpass Expectations, Driven by Semiconductor Strength

August 20, 2026Carlos Mendoza2 мин

Japan's exports experienced robust growth in July, marking the fifth consecutive month of gains and exceeding market expectations. This acceleration was largely propelled by strong shipments of semiconductor equipment, a sector benefiting from the ongoing artificial intelligence boom.

Overall export growth reached 23.2%, surpassing the 19.9% anticipated by economists. Shipments of semiconductor equipment saw a remarkable 49.1% increase in value, underscoring sustained demand.

Key trading partners showed increased demand for Japanese goods. Exports to China, Japan's largest trading partner, rose by 25.8%, while shipments to the United States climbed by 22%.

This surge in exports has played a crucial role in supporting Japan's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In the second quarter, the Japanese economy expanded by 0.7% year-on-year, an improvement from the 0.5% growth in the first quarter. Despite the GDP figures missing quarter-on-quarter and annualized projections, the export sector emerged as the primary driver of economic expansion, mitigating the impact of slower domestic growth.

On the import side, Japan saw a 27.8% increase in July, the highest since November 2022 and also exceeding analysts' estimates of 26.5%. This rise was significantly influenced by an 87.8% surge in petroleum imports by value, driven by climbing oil prices amid global geopolitical tensions. Japan relies heavily on imports for its energy needs, with over 87% of its energy requirements met through international sources.

Japan Exports Exceed Forecasts in July Driven by Semiconductor Boom

Japan's export performance in July surpassed expectations, demonstrating a strong upward trend for the fifth month in a row. This growth was significantly boosted by a substantial increase in semiconductor shipments, a key contributor to the nation's economic health and a reflection of the burgeoning artificial intelligence market.
