Trump's Bid to Transfer Hush Money Case to Federal Court Denied
A federal judge has rejected an attempt by former President Donald Trump to transfer his New York criminal hush money case, which recently resulted in his conviction, to federal court. This marks the second time Judge Alvin Hellerstein has denied Trump's request to have his case heard in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
Judge Hellerstein stated that Trump waited too long to seek the transfer after his conviction in May 2024. Trump was found guilty in a New York state Supreme Court of falsifying business records. These charges were related to a payment made to silence porn star Stormy Daniels concerning her claims of an affair with Trump prior to the 2016 election.
In his ruling, Judge Hellerstein emphasized that Trump cannot attempt to manipulate the court system. He stated, "He cannot play one court against another; he cannot seek victory in one court, and then, when it becomes apparent that the court will rule against him, seek to remove his case to another court."
The judge also indicated that Trump lacked legal grounds to remove the case from state court after his conviction and sentencing. Furthermore, Hellerstein concluded that the evidence presented during the trial did not violate presidential immunity, and Trump failed to demonstrate that he was prosecuted by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office for actions directly related to his presidency.
