Carlos Prates’ Dominant UFC Performance Surpasses Islam Makhachev’s Win

Carlos Prates secured a decisive third-round TKO against Jack Della Maddalena in the main event of UFC Fight Night Perth on May 2, 2026. The Brazilian fighter’s powerful leg kicks and elbows led to the stoppage at 3:17, marking his second victory over a former welterweight champion, following Leon Edwards. Former double champion and Islam Makhachev’s training partner, Daniel Cormier, analyzed Prates’ performance on his podcast.

Cormier Compares Prates’ Victory to Makhachev’s Title Defense

Cormier highlighted how Prates completely outclassed Della Maddalena, suggesting that if Prates were to challenge for the title next, no one would object. He contrasted this with Islam Makhachev’s championship win over the same opponent, stating, “The way Islam beat Jack was not nearly as impressive as what Carlos Prates did the other day.”

“It looked like Della Maddalena didn’t belong in there with Prates,” Cormier continued. “If that’s how Carlos fights from now on, if that’s who he is today, a guy that really takes his time, he’s patient, can pick people apart like that, and he’s huge for the weight class, he’s a real issue. I think that yesterday that young man did something so special because of the person he did it to.”

Makhachev won the welterweight title from Della Maddalena via unanimous decision at UFC 322 on November 15, 2025, extending his winning streak to 16. While Makhachev dominated in takedowns (18-0 over five rounds), Prates landed significantly more significant strikes (41-104) in just three rounds against Della Maddalena.

This impressive win positions Prates as a strong contender. While Ian Machado Garry is considered the likely next challenger for Makhachev’s belt, Prates himself stated post-fight, “I should be next,” citing his knockouts over two former champions who had never been finished that way before. Cormier agreed that Prates’ performance warranted consideration for a direct path to a title shot.

Della Maddalena’s record now stands at 18-4, with this being his second consecutive loss. He had previously won the title from Belal Muhammad by decision at UFC 315. Prates, known as “The Nightmare,” remains undefeated in the UFC with a perfect 6-0 record, all by finish. Standing at 6’0″ with an 80-inch reach, he possesses a significant physical advantage in the welterweight division.

Makhachev trains with Cormier at American Kickboxing Academy, and Cormier sees a direct link between Prates’ skillset and potential challenges for any fighter in the 170-pound division. The online reaction to Prates’ victory was overwhelmingly positive, with many fighters hailing it as a masterpiece. Despite the hometown advantage for Della Maddalena at UFC Perth, Prates delivered a stunning upset.

This result creates significant intrigue in the welterweight division. With Garry poised to face Makhachev, Prates’ dominant performance ensures he remains a prominent figure and a serious threat.
