The rivalry between middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev and challenger Sean Strickland for UFC 328 has escalated with personal insults exchanged online. Ahead of their May 9 bout at Newark’s Prudential Center, Chimaev initially suggested he and his team would confront Strickland outside the cage, implying Strickland would back down. Strickland responded aggressively on Twitter, using derogatory terms and mocking Chimaev’s association with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, predicting a lack of sportsmanship after the fight.
While Chimaev’s camp has largely dismissed the animosity, focusing on training, UFC CEO Dana White has increased security and canceled a scheduled faceoff to maintain order, drawing parallels to past intense UFC rivalries like Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.
Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub, on his podcast, strongly criticized Chimaev’s threat to involve his team. Schaub deemed the statement “lame and gay,” interpreting it as a sign of weakness rather than a display of personal strength. He contrasted this with Strickland’s tightly-knit team, which he believes reacts collectively to perceived insults. Schaub emphasized the need for the UFC to closely monitor the situation to prevent any disruptions that could jeopardize the fight.
“That’s kind of lame and gay, like you’re talking all this sh-t, well my buddies are going to jump you. It’s like you’re the man, what do you mean you’re going to jump him? If you mess with one of them, you mess with all of them. They’re super tight knit. They don’t take kindly to insults. If I thought there were a bunch of guys coming after me, I’d be prepared too. The UFC needs to be on top of it, otherwise we’re not going to get this fight.”
Chimaev, with an undefeated 15-0 record, is a top-ranked pound-for-pound fighter, known for his overwhelming wrestling and pace. Strickland, holding a 30-7 record, has secured wins against notable opponents like Israel Adesanya and Anthony Hernandez, relying on volume striking and endurance.
UFC 328 is set to be headlined by this middleweight title fight. The co-main event will feature a flyweight championship bout between Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira.
This volatile situation highlights the security challenges during fight week. The contrasting personalities and fighting styles of Chimaev and Strickland contribute to the compelling narrative surrounding the upcoming title defense. The championship belt will be on the line Saturday night.
