Islam Makhachev has responded to Ian Machado Garry’s recent accusations, clarifying that the delay in a potential fight is not due to his health but rather the UFC’s issuance of a contract. Garry had previously criticized the champion, alleging inconsistencies in the timeline for his return.
Makhachev took to social media to counter Garry’s remarks, posting, “Don’t worry about my injuries. I’m ready at any time. I’m waiting for the contract.” This statement came after Garry publicly questioned Makhachev’s availability, citing conflicting information regarding hand injuries and potential fight dates, sarcastically referring to him as a “princess.”
Garry’s eagerness stems from his pursuit of a UFC welterweight title shot. Following recent victories over Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad, Garry is positioned as a top contender in the division.
The confusion regarding Makhachev’s return has been fueled by differing statements. UFC President Dana White initially mentioned a hand injury that was difficult to assess, later suggesting an August return after earlier reports hinted at July. This discrepancy is what Garry highlighted in his public statements.
The welterweight title landscape remains dynamic, with the UFC reportedly considering various contenders for Makhachev’s first defense. Names like Kamaru Usman and Michael Morales have also been linked to potential matchups, indicating that Garry may not be the sole candidate being considered.
Islam Makhachev, the current UFC welterweight champion, also holds a past reign as the lightweight champion. He secured the lightweight title in 2022 and successfully defended it four times before moving up to defeat Jack Della Maddalena via unanimous decision at UFC 322 in November 2025 to claim the welterweight championship. Makhachev is consistently ranked among the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.
While Garry has actively campaigned for his title opportunity through consistent wins and visibility, Makhachev’s latest response shifts the focus from his physical condition to the contractual process. His statement implies that he is prepared to fight once the UFC officially offers the contract.
