Justin Gaethje’s Strategy to Neutralize Ilia Topuria’s Attacks

Justin Gaethje has outlined a comprehensive strategy to overcome Ilia Topuria.

Gaethje, the reigning two-time interim UFC Lightweight Champion, is set to face the undisputed 155-pound titleholder, Ilia Topuria, on June 14th. This highly anticipated title unification bout will headline UFC Freedom 250.

Prior to their confrontation, Topuria, also known as “El Matador,” has confidently predicted a first-round knockout victory over Gaethje, nicknamed “The Highlight.” Now, Gaethje has shared his tactical plan and the key considerations he believes will lead him to victory on June 14th.

Justin Gaethje Details How He Plans to Dethrone Ilia Topuria

Justin Gaethje understands that his approach against Ilia Topuria must differ significantly from his previous fight against Paddy Pimblett earlier this year. In his bout with Pimblett, Gaethje maintained aggressive forward pressure for five rounds, refusing to retreat. His speed and relentless assault allowed him to outstrike and bloody Pimblett, ultimately earning him the interim belt.

However, facing a precise striker like Ilia Topuria, Gaethje emphasizes the critical importance of controlling his positioning. He also highlighted that his head positioning will be a major factor in keeping him outside of Topuria’s striking range. The 37-year-old fighter stated that he must be exceptionally deliberate and diligent in his defense. In a recent interview, Gaethje explained:

“I really need to be cautious. He is shorter than me, and you don’t want your head to be significantly higher than opponents who are launching dangerous strikes at you. Positioning will be the most critical element in this fight. I must maintain a very resolute stance, control the space, manage his footwork, and be extremely diligent in my defense. I have to consistently win the battle of angles and distance.”

During the same interview, “The Highlight” also issued a stark warning to “El Matador”:

“I am facing an absolutely incredible opponent. I will alter his face, just as I do with all my opponents.”

Justin Gaethje has a solid game plan to dismantle Ilia Topuria.

Gaethje, the current and two-time interim UFC lightweight champion, will lock horns with reigning 155-pound titleholder Topuria on June 14th at the White House. This title unification matchup will serve as the UFC Freedom 250 headliner bout.

Ahead of the matchup, “El Matador” has promised that he will knock out “The Highlight” cold in Round 1 when they throw down. Now Gaethje has discussed his game plan and the things he will need to keep in mind to get his hand raised on June 14th.

Justin Gaethje Breaks Down Everything He Needs to Keep in Mind to Dethrone Ilia Topuria

Against Ilia Topuria, Justin Gaethje cannot afford to have the same approach and game plan he used against Paddy Pimblett earlier this year. Gaethje dogwalked Pimblett for five rounds, constantly fighting off the front foot and refusing to back away. With his speed and pressure, he outstruck and bloodied Pimblett to take home the interim belt.

However, against a sniper like Ilia Topuria, Gaethje believes controlling his positioning will be crucial. He also stressed that his head position will play a major factor in keeping himself out of the Georgian-Spaniard’s firing range. Lastly, the 37-year-old added that he has to be very calculated and ‘diligent in his defense.’ During an interview with John Morgan, Gaethje said:

“I’ve really got to be careful. He’s shorter than me, and you really don’t want your head to be too much higher than guys who are throwing missiles at you. Positioning is going to be the biggest factor in this fight. I have to be very stubborn with my position, control the space, control his feet, and really be diligent in my defense. I have to constantly be winning the angle battle and the distance battle.”

During the same interview, “The Highlight” also sent a chilling warning to “El Matador.” He said:

“I’m fighting a guy that is absolutely incredible. I’m gonna change his face just like I always do to all my opponents.”
