NHL Rumors: Hellebuyck Trade Impact, Larkin to Canadiens?, Penguins Sell-Off
The goalie market shifted after the Winnipeg Jets traded Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils. This move forces other teams to re-evaluate their goaltending needs.
Reports suggest Dylan Larkin might consider a trade to the Montreal Canadiens, despite his initial no-trade list. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Penguins face a crossroads: if their season doesn't improve, a significant sell-off of valuable players is likely.
Hellebuyck Traded to Devils, Affecting Other Teams
The highly anticipated Hellebuyck trade is complete, leaving teams that pursued the star goalie to look elsewhere. The Devils sent Dawson Mercer, Nico Daws, Nick Bjugstad, prospect Alex Command, and two draft picks to Winnipeg, a price considered fair for both sides.
For the Buffalo Sabres, who were seen as front-runners, the focus now returns to Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen confirmed their belief in Luukkonen as their future starter, indicating they were aware they were out of the Hellebuyck sweepstakes.
The Utah Mammoth, also reportedly in the running, remains uncertain about Karel Vejmelka as their starting goaltender, prompting their search for an upgrade. The Carolina Hurricanes, who had an offer on the table for months, were also interested in Hellebuyck. Pierre LeBrun noted that the trade must be disappointing for Carolina, losing out on a top goalie within their division.
Larkin Might Consider Canadiens Trade
As of October 24th, Dylan Larkin had not included the Canadiens on his approved trade list. However, fan support and the Canadiens' contender status could influence his decision. While his list excluded Montreal, sources indicate they would make a strong pitch if he became open to it.
Chris Johnston expressed optimism on "The Chris Johnston Show," suggesting it's not a definitive "no" for Montreal. He also hinted that a move to a Canadian team isn't entirely off the table for Larkin.
Penguins Could Initiate Major Sell-Off
After making the playoffs last season, the Pittsburgh Penguins' start to the 2026-27 season has been disappointing. With a 4-6-1 record, they are already trailing in the playoff race, potentially triggering a full rebuild.
Several players with expiring contracts could be on the move. Forwards like Evgeni Malkin, Justin Brazeau, and Andre Kuzmenko, along with defensemen Erik Karlsson, Sam Girard, and Spencer Stastney, represent potential rental assets for playoff-bound teams. The Penguins could secure draft picks and prospects in return.
Darren Dreger mentioned on TSN's Insider Trading that Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, and Kris Letang are also potential trade candidates if the team's struggles persist. Notably, Sidney Crosby is not considered a trade candidate and is expected to finish his career with Pittsburgh.
