Eddie Alvarez: Justin Gaethje vs. Ilia Topuria Rematch Could Be a UFC Disaster
Legendary MMA fighter Eddie Alvarez has voiced his strong opinion that a second fight between Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria could prove to be a significant misstep for the UFC.
Following Ilia Topuria's defeat to Justin Gaethje, the question of Topuria's next move has been a topic of much discussion. While an immediate rematch might seem unlikely after the punishment Topuria endured, recent indications suggest the UFC is leaning in that direction.
For Justin Gaethje, the outcome of their first encounter was largely in his favor. However, the potential for a rematch carries inherent risks, especially considering that Topuria managed to hurt Gaethje on several occasions during their initial bout.
In a recent interview, Eddie Alvarez, who has previously faced Justin Gaethje, shared his perspective on the proposed rematch:
Alvarez's Concerns Regarding a Gaethje vs. Topuria Rematch
"No, there shouldn't be a rematch," Alvarez stated to MMA Junkie. "He thoroughly defeated him. When someone dominates you to that extent, a rematch isn't warranted. The fight needs to be competitive. He completely outclassed him. You don't automatically get a rematch. You need to fight someone else first. That was a one-sided affair. I can understand the UFC's desire to elevate Topuria. They aim to capture that specific market. He's a significant figure who generates considerable revenue and has the potential to bring substantial earnings to the company. However, this rematch could be a disaster for the UFC. Giving him another shot, especially since Justin and Trevor Wittman seemingly have his number, means he's not just going to forget what happened in their previous fight.
His mind will still carry the psychological effects, a form of PTSD, that will inhibit his ability to perform at his peak. There will be a natural restraint, a hesitation, a voice saying, 'Whoa, wait a minute.' He won't be the same Ilia Topuria who faced Justin Gaethje after being so thoroughly beaten. I believe he needs to face a less formidable opponent to rebuild his confidence and rediscover his capabilities. He shouldn't just disappear. Even if he believes he's moved past it, the mental impact, particularly given the level of damage sustained, will remain significant."
