Islam Makhachev Criticizes Ian Machado Garry's Excessive Respect During UFC 330 Fight

Islam Makhachev, the reigning UFC welterweight champion, believes that Ian Machado Garry was overly demonstrative with his respectful gestures throughout their UFC 330 title fight. Makhachev, who successfully defended his title against Garry via unanimous decision, felt that Garry's frequent displays of respect, including dapping and hugging, were out of place in a professional bout.

Makhachev articulated his thoughts during the post-fight press conference, stating, "Honestly, I don’t understand. This is a fight. This is not something we have to hug each other every round. We’re going to war. We’re going to break the face, to break the eye. I respect all my opponents. But [maybe he’s young]. He respects too much."

He further emphasized the intensity of professional combat, adding, "I respect him. He’s a good guy. Very kind. But this is a war. Look at my face. I just come to beat everything. It’s not something you have to play. This is a fight. This is not a game.”

Despite the loss, Ian Machado Garry remains determined to achieve his UFC championship aspirations, believing he has ample time to do so. Meanwhile, Islam Makhachev is slated to face potential contenders Carlos Prates and Michael Morales. Makhachev intends to return to competition before Ramadan, suggesting his next fight will likely occur no later than January 2027, following his first successful welterweight title defense.
