Khamzat Chimaev Prioritizes Middleweight Rematch Over Light Heavyweight Move

Arman Tsarukyan, a prominent lightweight contender, has confirmed that Khamzat Chimaev is not currently planning a move to the light heavyweight division (205 pounds).

Despite initial discussions about moving up in weight following his recent title loss at UFC 328, Tsarukyan, who is a close friend and training partner of Chimaev, revealed that “Borz” has reconsidered. Chimaev is now reportedly determined to secure a rematch with Sean Strickland to regain the lost glory.

Speaking on the JAXXON Podcast, Tsarukyan stated that Chimaev is more motivated than ever and is willing to set aside his aspirations of becoming a two-division champion to face Strickland again.

“Khamzat wants to do the rematch. His head is ready to go, and he’s more motivated than before.”

While Khamzat Chimaev is eager for an immediate rematch with Sean Strickland, the current two-time UFC middleweight champion’s stance differs. Chimaev aims to fight Strickland in October in Abu Dhabi and has reportedly already begun training after his UFC 328 defeat.

Sean Strickland, however, recently expressed to Full Send MMA that Chimaev should secure a couple of wins before being considered for another title shot. Strickland emphasized the importance of the UFC’s ranking system, stating:

“As of always you go get a couple W’s and I’ll see you again, that’s how it works. I truly believe ranking systems matter in the UFC and whenever they don’t, it belittles the sport. So go get a couple W’s and I’ll see you again.”
