Boxing heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has reportedly rejected an offer to stand as a candidate for Reform UK, the party led by Nigel Farage. Sources indicate that Fury was approached about a potential role as a candidate for a future mayoral position in Lancashire, but he has declined the offer and expressed no further interest in pursuing a political career at this time.
Reform UK, known for its strategy of leveraging well-known public figures to boost its support base, had apparently considered Fury as a potential candidate, possibly for the upcoming Makerfield contest. The party is currently weighing various options for this nomination, including local activists, former Conservative party members, and other public personalities.
This is not the first time Tyson Fury’s name has been linked to politics. In 2015, he expressed an intention to become the Member of Parliament for Morecambe, stating a desire to improve the town. At that time, he also voiced concerns about the public’s focus on immigration, arguing for greater attention to issues such as drug and alcohol addiction within the community.
However, his earlier political aspirations never materialized into a campaign, and recent reports suggest a similar outcome this time. Fury, now 37, is understood to have no current desire to re-engage with political ambitions. Having lived in Morecambe, Lancashire, for approximately 17 years, he recently relocated to the Isle of Man, citing privacy and security as contributing factors.
While Reform UK continues its efforts to secure high-profile candidates for upcoming contests, particularly in the Greater Manchester area where they have seen some local election success, Tyson Fury appears to be prioritizing his boxing career. His immediate focus is reportedly on a highly anticipated heavyweight bout against Anthony Joshua, slated for late 2026.
Reform UK has frequently been a subject of controversy due to its assertive stance on immigration, confrontational political style, and issues surrounding the conduct of some of its candidates and officials. Critics often characterize the party as being driven by protest and media attention, while its supporters maintain it offers a viable alternative to established political parties.
The party has faced ongoing criticism regarding its candidate vetting processes, with reports of offensive social media posts, discriminatory remarks, and the promotion of conspiracy theories leading to the suspension, resignation, or expulsion of several individuals. Reform UK’s policy proposals, such as advocating for mass deportations and an “ICE-style” deportation command, have been labeled as unrealistic and extreme by critics. This combination of strong messaging and recurring candidate controversies contributes to the party’s often controversial public perception, particularly when figures like Tyson Fury are considered for candidacy.
