Tom Aspinall Eyes Winner of Pereira vs. Gane for UFC Heavyweight Unification
UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has his sights set on facing the victor of the highly anticipated interim title bout between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane, scheduled for UFC Freedom 250.
This pivotal co-main event, featured on the UFC’s White House card, will see Alex Pereira attempt to secure a historic third divisional title (or 2.5, as some note) within the promotion against Ciryl Gane for the UFC interim heavyweight championship. The prevailing expectation is that Aspinall, once medically cleared, will return later this year to unify the undisputed and interim titles against whoever emerges victorious.
Aspinall has endured a challenging and frustrating period with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. His recent collaboration with promoter Eddie Hearn could potentially exacerbate existing tensions between himself and UFC President Dana White, given White's well-documented rivalry with Hearn.
Following the announcement of the Pereira vs. Gane matchup, Tom Aspinall shared his perspective on his UFC future in a recent video update.
Tom Aspinall Looks Ahead
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aspinall questioned the depth of potential matchups, stating, “Who else is going to fight? The division’s on its ass. There’s not many big fights to make, is there? So they’ve got to do what they’ve got to do.”
He explicitly stated his intention: “Obviously, I want to fight the winner of that.” Aspinall further elaborated on his recovery process, explaining, “Just waiting now to get the green light, the all clear from the doctor to start training properly again. As soon as we can start training properly again, full contact in the gym, we will be getting a fight date booked to fight the winner. Just waiting for the clearance to be medically cleared, and then we go.”
He confirmed, “As soon as the doctor clears me, we’ll let the UFC know and we’ll be looking to book a fight soon as possible.”
While Aspinall’s full recovery remains the utmost priority, his potential return promises two massive matchups. A fight against Pereira would offer a historic clash, while a rematch with Gane would carry the added significance of confronting the opponent responsible for his initial injury.
